We, the Pretenders

Hidden in the open
Shadows only within
In the light, darkness stays shrouded
Posed as flesh – a mask too realistic
Until morphed into truth
Forgotten secrets and infinite creation

Staring at Corners

Knowing life’s wandered far
Knowing death has come to where you are
Learning the things potpourri
The living weren’t to ever see
Learning of before the birds and the bees
Learning of after catastrophes
Staring blankly at that single spot
Certain that certain things just can’t be bought

In that silence and solitude
A smile breaks the mood
A single smirk
On your face, it shall lurk
Timid and strong
You fit yet don’t belong
Captive yet free
Blind and yet you can see

A mass of contradictions
As you lie there without restrictions
What had always held you down
Seems insignificant this time around
Staring at corners
Wary of mourners
Because death shouldn’t be feared
As you know once your mind was cleared

The pulling at your heart
The worries from the start
The questions in your mind
The problems you left behind
The ticking of the clock
The future you must walk
The walls and ceiling meet
The embrace become your corner sweet

Backed up against it
You are split
Banished to it
You are unfit
But from where you lie
Staring at it by and by
You are stronger than you’ve ever been
Feeling no regret nor chagrin
At the time which you should be the weakest
You finally understand the deepest

Staring at corners still
You have regained your will
As death encroaches
A new life approaches
A light for your darkest hours
No need for tears and bundles of flowers
Because in this moment
You know your life was potent
And you smile and close your eyes
And you and those corners say your goodbyes

Sharing the Skylight

The clock has not yet chimed twelve,

It hasn’t reached noon,

Yet high with the fiery sun,

I spot the glow of the moon

I look in amazement,

I ponder the thought,

Why did they choose cooperation today,

When for attention they usually fought

The sun’s bright beams shined all day,

The moon smiled silently through the night,

To one another, nothing to say

Until today, all they did was fight

This morning, though,

I looked upon the sky

And say the two hand in hand,

Tired of being malicious and sly

Instead of provoking one another,

Or hogging the stage

They stood together

Sharing the fame and wage

The wage of our looks

Of admiration and awe

When glancing up from our work and books,

There seemed to be not a single flaw

Open Blinds

Rush of light floods in

Through eyes shut sensed

Awaken by unrelenting brightness

Streaming steady, endlessly inward

Bathing the room in light

Unavoidable, inevitable

Escapes a moan of despair

Eyes forced to contradictions

No longer able to drift back to sleep

Yet wanting nothing more than escape

The blinding intensity of the rays

Outlining luminosity a ton

Uncovering the whites

Of the eyes, and the iris bright

Lifting the blanketing lids covering

The warmth of the darkness and night

During sleep, comfort stripped

Away from dreaming
